Windscribe offers the most dependable free VPN for changing your IP address location to Germany. Its two free servers in Frankfurt easily unblocked German websites and streaming services.

But, the free version of Windscribe is meaningfully worse than NordVPN. Its speeds are slower, resulting in some blurriness during live streams and playback, and its 10GB monthly data limit limits you to around four hours of HD streaming.

Two Servers in Frankfurt with Good Speeds

You can get a German IP address by connecting to either of Windscribe Free’s two German servers. The ‘Frankfurt – Wurstchen’ server is a 10Gbps server, with greater bandwidth and faster speeds.

    Windscribe Free German Servers

Windscribe operates two free VPN servers in Frankfurt.

These severs delivered so far the fastest speeds of any free VPN connecting into Germany.

We measured an average speed loss of only 20% connecting from abroad, which is 10% better than the second fastest free VPN, PrivadoVPN.

Surprisingly Good at Unblocking German TV

Windscribe Free unblocked all geo-restricted German streaming websites we tested it with, including Netflix Germany, ProSieben, RTL+, and DAZN Germany.

    Windscribe Free ProSieben Streaming Test

Windscribe Free unblocked ProSieben from outside Germany.

We used the VPN’s native apps for macOS, Windows, Android, iOS and Fire TV to do so, as well as its completely free Chrome and Firefox extensions.

The big problem with using Windscribe Free is its 10GB monthly data limit, which heavily restricts your streaming time to roughly four hours of high definition content.

240 Servers Optimized for Unblocking German Content

NordVPN has one of the largest German server networks on the market. Only CyberGhost and PIA have more.

All its servers, located in Berlin and Frankfurt performed optimally for us, with no fast and consistent connections, server overloads, and no instability.

All of NordVPN’s German servers impressively unblocked German streaming services like ProSieben, ZDF, DMAX, and RTL+.

We also accessed Netflix Germany’s library without issues and across all of NordVPN’s apps. Not to mention that the VPN works with DAZN and we watched Bundesliga games via the German content library.

    NordVPN DAZN Germany Streaming Test

We streamed the NordVPN enables you to stream Bundesliga and more sports on DAZN Germany.

The Fastest VPN Connecting into Germany

NordVPN is the fastest VPN for Germany, with average speeds of 92Mbps when connecting from abroad.

To put this into perspective, this is only 8% slower than our test internet connection speed, and the best performance of any VPN connecting into Germany.

These speeds are in part due to NordVPN’s in-house protocol NordLynx, which is built on top of the WireGuard protocol, and its very good range of servers in the country.

You can also get a German IP address using the VPN’s Chrome and Firefox browser extensions, which also include a built-in VPN ad blocker for a ‘cleaner’ web browsing experience.

    NordVPN Browser Extension

NordVPN’s browser extensions makes getting a German IP address simple.

If you’d rather test the service before purchasing it, you can try NordVPN for seven days completely free by downloading the app from the Google Play Store. Alternatively, there is always a 30-day money-back guarantee to take advantage of.

  2. 2. CyberGhost: Cheapest Germany VPN

Very affordable VPN with the largest server network in Germany.

    • Smart DNS works with German TV services

    • Doesn't work with DAZN or RTL+
    • Slower long-distance speeds than NordVPN & Windscribe
    • Dated browser extensions with few locations
    • Doesn’t always work with IPv6 connections
    • No native Apple TV application

CyberGhost is a low-cost alternative to NordVPN. It also offers a one-day, three-day and seven-day free trial.

The VPN provider maintains the largest German server network of any VPN: over 1,300 servers across Berlin, Dusseldrof, and Frankfurt. That said, its unblocking and speed test results have been mixed.

    The Largest German Server Network

CyberGhost’s huge German server park in Germany of over 1,300 VPN servers is three times bigger than the second largest, PIA’s range of 530 servers.

    CyberGhost Germany Server Network

CyberGhost has over 1,300 servers across three German cities.

With so many servers, it’s no surprise that we’ve rarely seen server loads in Germany above 50%.

What was surprising, though, were CyberGhost’s internet speeds when connected to these servers. Connecting from abroad, we registered 15% average speed loss, which was substantially worse than NordVPN’s.

Despite these slower international speeds, we didn’t suffer from buffering or picture blurriness in our regular tests.

    Mixed Unblocking Results

CyberGhost is one of the most affordable VPNs. It only costs $2.03 on its two-year pricing plan, which is an excellent price for a VPN as good as CyberGhost.

Having said that, CyberGhost isn’t as reliable as NordVPN when it comes to bypassing German geo-restrictions.

While it worked with Netflix Germany and ProSieben, the VPN currently doesn’t unblock DAZN Germany or RTL+.

We also wish CyberGhost would update its browser extensions, which only have a few server locations and look dated compared to NordVPN and Windscribe. At least they include German servers.

If you’re unsure about getting this VPN, we suggest trialing CyberGhost beforehand by testing it totally free for 24 hours on PC and Mac.

Alternatively, you can get a three-day trial via the Google Play Store or a seven-day free trial via the Apple App Store.

Germany VPNs You Should Avoid

We’ve been testing VPNs in-depth since 2016. That means we don’t just know which VPNs to recommend for Germany, we also know which VPNs to avoid.

Below are some popular VPNs that we tested that didn’t make our list. Whether you want a free or paid VPN for Germany, you should avoid the ones below:

Proton VPN Free

What we don’t like: Proton VPN Free is an excellent free VPN in general, primarily because it doesn’t have a data cap, but it doesn’t have any free servers in Germany.

IPVanish

What we don’t like: IPVanish is a top VPN, but it only has 56 German servers and it’s let down by its streaming performance. We found it couldn’t unblock geo-restricted German streaming sites like RTL+, ProSieben, DAZN and Netflix.

Private Internet Access (PIA)

What we don’t like: Private Internet Access very nearly made our list. It’s a good VPN for Germany thanks to its many servers in Germany however it just isn’t as effective at unblocking German streaming services.

Surfshark

What we don’t like: Surfshark certainly delivers when it comes to unblocking German streaming platforms, but we experience slow waiting times as well as speeds on its Germany servers.

How to Get a German IP Address Using a VPN

To get a German IP address you need a VPN with servers in Germany. Fortunately, most paid VPNs include German IP addresses as part of their server network.

Follow the instructions below to change your VPN location and get a German IP address. We use NordVPN in this example, but most VPNs follow the same basic instructions.

In the video below, we demonstrate how easy it is to get a German IP address using a VPN:

You can change your IP address to a German one in a matter of seconds.

Reasons for Using a VPN for Germany

A VPN is necessary to unblock web and video content locked to German IP addresses. VPN software allows you to change your IP address location to a German city and use the web as if you’re really there.

A good VPN for Germany will maintain many German IP addresses that therefore unblock German platforms from abroad, including ZDF, RTL+, ProSieben, Netflix Germany, and DAZN Germany.

Testing ExpressVPN with ProSieben

EXPERT ADVICE: German TV and radio station websites ARD, NDR (Norddeutscher Rundfunk), and MDR (Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk) aren’t geo-blocked and therefore are freely available outside of Germany.

How We Test VPNs for Germany

We use an extensive Germany-specific testing process to evaluate the best free and paid VPNs for Germany.

See how each Germany VPN we recommend performed in our key testing categories:

Below you can see the exact methodology we used to calculate each VPN’s rating:

1. Germany Server Locations: 30%

The most important thing for a Germany VPN is a network of German servers that enable you to get a German IP address in multiple cities.

You also need lots of servers in different countries to get international IP addresses.

The more servers the better, because it avoids congestion and maintains reliable speeds.

2. Germany Streaming: 20%

Most people want a VPN for Germany to stream geo-blocked content.

That’s why we regularly test each VPN’s ability to unblock popular German streaming sites outside the country, including RTL+, ProSieben, DAZN Germany, and Netflix Germany.

NordVPN German Netflix Streaming Test

We’ve tested all 65 VPNs with German streaming sites, including German Netflix.

3. International Streaming: 20%

We also test each VPN’s ability to unblock international streaming sites from inside Germany.

We test each VPN with 12 popular streaming services from across the globe, including US Netflix, HBO Max, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, Channel 4, Amazon Prime Video, and more.

4. Speed: 20%

The faster the speeds when connecting into and out of Germany, the better. We perform regular speed tests for each VPN connecting into Germany, from New York to Frankfurt.

We work out the average US to Germany speed performance and give the best rating to the fastest VPN.

5. Privacy & Logging Policy: 10%

Like many European countries, German ISPs monitor and record the browsing activity of their users. Put simply, it’s not a privacy-friendly nation.

For this reason, privacy protections are a big part of our VPN analysis. We examine each VPN’s logging policy to ensure it doesn’t log more of your data than necessary, and we assess its ability to encrypt and protect your sensitive data.

This informs our analysis of a VPN’s ability to keep you safe when sharing files. We look for the presence of a kill switch, a fast average bitrate, a private logging policy, and advanced tools like port forwarding.

Data Cap Reduction: Up to 50%

Although free services can perform well in our tests, data caps limit your VPNs overall performance.

To reflect this, we’ve apply a penalty to a free VPN’s overall rating based on how harsh its data cap is. It works like this:

  • 10GB per month: -20% to the overall rating
  • 500MB per day: -25% to the overall rating
  • 5GB per month: -30% to the overall rating
  • 1GB per month: -35% to the overall rating
  • 200MB per day: -40% to the overall rating
  • 500MB per month: -50% to the overall rating

With only 10GB of data available per month, we’ve docked 20% off Windscribe Free’s overall score.
